Muralist Diego Rivera's representation of indigenous men painting maps in pre-Columbian times. "Mapas" or "pinturas" from indigenous communities of the colonial period are especially abundant and are much more than cartographic works -- they typically include a history of origins, migrations, town founding, church construction, baptism, and genealogies of local elite families, often descending from a founding couple.
