View of Cuernavaca's
cathedral, formerly the church of the Franciscan monastery
of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Cuauhnahuac (the
latter the precontact Nahuatl name for Cuernavaca).
The main building dates from the sixteenth century,
with the soaring bell tower being added later, in stages
stretching over a couple of hundred years. Just to the
right of the tower and in the background it is possible
to catch a glimpse of the original stone structure on
the site, the capilla abierta (open chapel) of San José.
